Fantastic Alice took us to Wonderland
Emma Miller was fantastic as Alice in this ballet. Given that words were so important to author Lewis Carroll, telling this story without any is always going to be an undertaking and the fantastic dancers of the company rose to the challenge. We loved the tea tray tutus and tea cup hats in the tea party scene. We loved the way the company tackled the challenge of making Alice grow taller and shrink. The solution of Alice's head above the door and another dancer's leg below made everyone laugh. A romantic pas de deux between Alice and the Knave of Hearts is certainly not part of the book but worked wonderfully on stage. The falling down the rabbit hole scene was a little bit disappointing but was always going to be difficult to do on stage. With no particular music attached to the story the company chose a selection of pieces by different composers. We especially liked the pieces from Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals which seem to be made for dancing. Altogether a great night out.
