Review by Ann Evans

It’s an evening of popular Andrew Lloyd Webber Music with the one act, one woman production of Tell Me On A Sunday at Rugby Theatre. And the artist taking on this legendary role, following in the footsteps of the likes of Marti Webb, Denise Van Outen and Jodie Prenger, and doing a beautiful job of it is Hayley Glover who has some twenty-six songs to perform.

Hayley is backed offstage by Hayley Garner, Claire Tyler and Emma Bright under the musical direction of  Richard Dunster-Sigtermans who is also on keys; Mike Read is on flute and saxophone, Maxine McGinnes on Cello, Pete Hurst on guitar, Jon Heywood on bass and Benedict Williams on drums/percussion. In the second part of the show, vocal coach and co-director of music teaching companies ‘Rugby Music Centre’ and ‘True Music’ Emma Butler joins the ladies on stage. The production is directed by Kenny Robinson.

Tell Me On A Sunday with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Don Black tells the story of a young English girl arriving in New York expecting to meet her boyfriend, and enjoy a happy future and success in the film industry. She soon discovers however that the boyfriend has cheated on her, and her career is a non-starter. She then finds herself in a string of relationships, where the men continually let her down.

Whilst the music of the six-piece orchestra, Hayley’s beautiful voice and the harmonies of the trio of backing singers is a delight, the actual storyline of the introduction of each new boyfriend, her joy at finding him followed by the letter home to mum, then the breakdown of the relationship and the dumping of his photo in the bin did feel slightly repetitive.

And I would certainly have kept the photo frames! (joke!)

The second half with Hayley accompanied on stage with the four fabulous Ladies of Lloyd Webber there was more variety with twelve songs from musicals such as Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Whistle Down the Wind and Evita amongst others. Each routine was different, full of emotion - and humour when called for such as in U-N-C-O-U-P-L-E-D., and some powerful renditions that the audience absolutely loved.

An evening of delightful musical entertainment featuring some of the best-loved Andrew Lloyd Webber songs, performed faultlessly by five fabulous performers.
