Why is justice blind? Is Justice impartial or blinkered?
Consent by Nina Raine is an extremely powerful piece of contemporary theatre. Written and first performed at the National Theatre in 2017, Roger Michell’s production received fantastic reviews and a West End transfer a year later.
Exploring the nuances of consent and the criminal justice system during the #MeToo era, the play directed by Tara L. Lacey sees barristers and friends Ed and Tim take opposing briefs in a rape case. The challenging topics of the play are offset by the dark humour woven throughout, but this detached and unemotional stance of the middle-class – and at times unpleasant – protagonists gradually begins to impact their lives at home.
Described by reviewers as “emotionally bruising” and “awe-inspiringly eloquent”, Consent is a painful, challenging, yet funny play which aims to put Justice itself on trial.

Director Tara L. Lacey says: “The protagonists’ lives are ‘raw’ and ‘real’. Often, they reflect back to you something you yourself have felt and thought you understood! They are powerfully drawn with those significant issues surrounding consent, empathy and the inadequacy of the British legal system flowing through their lives in unexpected ways. The play examines social and class divide in a way that is hard to ignore, and I have no doubt this fantastic and searching play will stay with you long after our curtain has fallen.”
Please note the play contains strong language. Age guide 15+.
