Constellations, by Nick Payne at Leamington’s Loft Theatre, from Wednesday 26 February to Saturday 8 March.  Directed by Sue Moore.

Review by Nikki Thomas

Constellations is a refreshing opportunity to see characters free from linear direction. We are gifted a lens to differing interactions existing across multiverses. The staging is simple – as needed – just two very talented actors and a bench, as the audience is invited into the intimate tale of the physicist and the beekeeper.

The two leads – Ted McGowan and Leonie Slater – share an endearing chemistry. They bring the human element of empathy, so beautifully entwined with the exploration of infinite possibilities and the thought-provoking questions the story proposes. Are we a product of the chances we take or the ones we don’t? Does freewill truly exist? Or are we just particles bombarded with choices that have already been made?

The leads seem to charge each other as they flip between contrasting emotions as we are given rapid snapshots between universes. The audience gets to witness the different courses their relationship could take due to subtle choices. The story explores themes of grief, love and heartbreak alongside moments of joy and humour that help bring balance to a story that doesn’t shy from challenging its characters.

You will most likely leave this one reflecting on your own choices – the chances you took or didn’t take. You may leave the theatre like I did - feeling free and reflecting on infinite possibilities or take comfort in the belief that we are never finite. Our time with loved ones never ends but repeats. Either way this one will most likely stay with you long after the curtain drops.
