What a voice this lady has!

Elkie Brooks will be 80 in a few days time, but what a performer she is. Her voice is still as powerful as it ever was. She sang hit after hit, Pearl’s a Singer, Lilac Wine, Nights in White Satin, Fool if you think it’s Over, Gasoline Alley and many more. Nights in White Satin was incredible. Elkie hit all the high notes with ease as she did with all of the songs.

She came on stage looking like a million dollars. She wore a lovely long green, off the shoulder, dress, strapped high-heeled shoes, that in my wildest dreams, I would not be able to wear now. She took command of the stage and the audience. What a talented artist she is.

She sang a song called Red House by Jimi Hendrix and told the audience how, in the early 60’s, she went into a bar in London for an end of concert drink and recognised the guy sitting at the end of the table, it was no other than Jimi Hendrix. She went up to him and asked if she could record one of his songs, he said: ‘You’re that Elkie chick.’ She said she was, and he replied, ‘No don’t think so, you’re still a learner.’

Elkie’s stamina is dazzling. Not many 79 year olds would be able to do star jumps on stage. She was accompanied by a band of outstanding musicians, and she moved around the stage interacting with them all. Well done Elkie for a fabulous night and happy birthday for the 25 February.
