Girls Lead Temperance Takeover by CVFolk

Some of the most talented women on the local folk circuit make up the majority of the line-up at Leamington Folk Club on Thursday, 12 September.

This month’s show has been organised by CVFolk, and takes place at Leamington’s eminent music venue, Temperance. Advance tickets are already selling quickly.

Coventry singer-songwriter and one of the city’s finest fingerpick guitarists, Kristy Gallacher will be there. Recently back from maternity leave, she appears fresh from her powerful and highly acclaimed performance at this summer’s Warwick Folk Festival.

All female trio, Daisybell make their debut appearance at Temperance that evening. Playing a variety of instruments and blending voices to produce stirring harmonies, Katherine Fear, Anya Fay and Charlie Adams have built up a national reputation performing a fun repertoire, often featuring some of Katherine’s well-crafted and engaging songs.

Also making their Temperance premiere, the original duo version of The Harvesters will be there, presenting a taste of back-porch traditional American songs. These days, husband and wife Ian and Sue Hartland normally appear as part of a trio, but their slide guitarist and banjo-player Bob Powell can’t be with them for this date. They’ll be making up for it with their finesse on numerous traditional instruments and some spectacular percussive step-dancing from Sue.

Dynamic singer and guitarist Steff Hutchinson forms half of the highly rated folk-rockin’ Warwickshire duo Firedaze. She’s joined on stage by 5-string bass-player and singer Chris Radley, the man behind the mellow low note arrangements, as a member of popular concert and ceilidh band Rack and Ruin.

The male minority also includes accomplished singer and songwriter Paul Gibson. He’s no stranger to the Temperance stage or indeed other CVFolk events and is noted for his ability to connect with audiences through a repertoire of skilfully written material which summon up real-life experiences.

The show will be hosted by the club’s inimitable singer, guitarist and compere Andi Wolf, known for matching the eloquence of his own self-penned songs with his relaxed and quirky style of patter.

Temperance has been hosting its Folk Club Performers Nights every second Thursday since February 2022. The format has proved remarkably successful with some of the most widely followed folk and acoustic acts in the region sharing the bill with new names and rising stars. This is the third occasion that CVFolk has been invited to curate one of the evenings.

Each event used to feature nine artists performing just three songs each, but numbers have recently been trimmed down to six acts, playing slightly longer sets. Tickets usually sell out – no surprise as they’re just £5 (plus booking fee) available from Eventbrite via Temperance’s website, https://www.temperance.bar.
