Paul Curran & Friends - His only Sonnet

Paul Curran

Paul Curran & Friends. His Only Sonnet – an evening of poetry old and new. At The Loft Theatre, Victoria Colonnade, Leamington Spa, for one night only, on Saturday 20 May at 8pm.

“These are poems of our time for the time, the sonnet form exploited in refreshingly contemporary and relevant ways.” Roger Pringle, Former director of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, director of the Stratford-upon-Avon Poetry Festival (1972-2007).

Poets have been enthralled and challenged by the sonnet ever since it was imported from Italy to England in the sixteenth century, and the same is true for Paul Curran, author of five books of poetry and a regular contributor of a ‘Poetry Corner’ feature to local radio stations.

In this very special evening at the Loft Theatre, Paul discusses how the sonnet form has met the particular needs of almost every major poet since Petrarch. The sonnets of Wordsworth, Keats, Larkin, Shelley, Shakespeare and others will be heard alongside Paul’s work in an evening which hopes to illustrate the inexhaustible appeal of the sonnet.

Artistic Director Sue Moore says: “What do you know about sonnets? Some are so familiar, but it is a form of poetry used through the ages up to our contemporary poets too. Paul Curran – a professional actor from film, TV and stage (and also the Loft!) – fell in love with poetry at Oxford and has written and published over 200 poems. He has curated a wonderful evening of the very best and most significant poems ever written. Reading them is one thing but hearing them read is quite different.”

Tickets can be booked online at any time via the Loft Theatre Company website www.lofttheatrecompany.com, by emailing boxoffice@lofttheatrecompany.com, or by calling 01926 830 680 (answer phone service).
