I must confess I thought this would be a musical for children, but I was wrong. It was a funny, light-hearted, whimsical adaptation of the much loved film. Nuneaton Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (NAODS) have pulled it off again with this extremely professional and fast flowing show.
Shrek (played by Tony George) was a magnificent ogre. Cast out from his family home aged just seven, he had to build a life for himself. He carried that chip on his shoulder for years, ending up as a grumpy old ogre living alone in a swamp.
Donkey (played by Shane West) was outstanding. He entertained the audience with his quick-witted one-liners and his perfect facial and body expressions. Fiona (played by Abbie Freeman) was a delight. She sang all of her songs beautifully and never missed a note, and she made a gorgeous green bride.
One of the funniest scenes was when Fiona and Shrek had a trumping and burping competition. Young Fiona (Cheyenne West) and Teen Fiona (Sophie Barnes) also sang well and were a delight to listen to.
Lord Farquaad (played by Nathan Harvey) executed his role with great aplomb. It can’t be easy to do a whole show on your knees, but he managed it and gave a superb performance. He is also a great ad-libber and had the audience in stitches when he lost his hat and his crown.
The Dragon (played by Laura West) was amazing. At around eight feet tall, it walked on to the set bellowing fire (well, maybe just a fine mist.) Laura controlled and conveyed the dragon’s thoughts and actions extremely well for such an enormous beast.
All of the fairy tale characters were superb and had the audience rocking with laughter at some of their antics. This is a show you don’t want to miss.
