Rehearsals are well underway as the Leamington & Warwick Musical Society leap into the world of fairytales. Shrek the Musical promises to be a magical family show that audiences are going to love.
Join Shrek and his trusty sidekick Donkey as they set out on a quest to defeat the fearsome dragon and rescue the beautiful Princess Fiona. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with attitude and other fairytale misfits and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a big hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand… and his name is SHREK!

A heart-warming story with a cast of unforgettable characters, this colourful musical extravaganza promises an experience you won’t want to miss. It’s the perfect night out for family and friends, guaranteed to delight audiences of all ages.
Originally the LWMS received almost 100 applications from people wishing to join the company, proving hugely popular from a cast point of view. And it was quite a task whittling numbers down to 38 including four children. A spokesperson said, “Sadly we had to disappoint quite a few but we hope they return another year. Rehearsals are proving great fun and the box office is being kept busy too!”

Director Alec Brown said: “Most people will have seen one of the many films in the Shrek franchise over the years but probably not many will have read William Steig's 1990 book ‘Shrek’ that it all stems from. The stage show was an adaptation of the 2001 DreamWorks Animation film ‘Shrek’ and including parts of the sequels and Steig’s original works.
“The show is fantastic with a lot of humour children can relate to (bit gassy!!); a typical love story we see in so many musicals (although not always including Ogres!!), and a Donkey that must be running on full topped up batteries each performance, either that or something in his feed. It has been a pleasure to be asked to be Director for this year’s show and I hope the audiences enjoy it as much as we have rehearsing and performing it for them.”

Matt Everitt who plays Shrek had this to say: “This is my first show back with LWMS after 10 years and I am thrilled to be playing one of my favourite characters in the show. How often do you get the chance to fart and burp on stage? I have thoroughly enjoyed performing alongside this amazing group of people in what we think is a brilliant version of the show.”
Musical Director, Matt Flint added: “We've got a fantastic cast this year and there's a huge amount of talent both on and off stage. The nature of the show means everyone gets their moment to shine and it's been great seeing people grow into their roles during the rehearsal period. I'm looking forward to hearing it all come together once the band are present – there’s always a real buzz around the place during the band call.”

Playing Princess Fiona is Libby Lowe, Connor Clemons is Donkey, Kieran Corrigan plays Lord Farquaad and Amanda Thornton plays Dragon. Libby Lowe said, “If you do not leave the theatre smiling from ear to ear then we haven’t done our job! – ‘Shrek’ is the most magical show with the most fantastic message."
