Under Milk Wood By Dylan Thomas, directed by David Fletcher at The Loft Theatre, Leamington Spa. Running from Saturday 30 March to Saturday 6 April.
Preview.
The play, Under Milk Wood, was commissioned by the BBC as a radio play and had its first broadcast in January 1954. It was later adapted for the stage. To mark the 70th anniversary of this event, Loft Theatre will recreate a radio recording studio on the stage and in 1950s costumes will read the play as if it is being broadcast to the nation.
All sound effects and musical accompaniments will be performed live. Loft Theatres’ talented foley artists and musicians will be in the studio, ready to bring the play to life with authentic sounds and melodies, just as it would have been heard seven decades ago.
Experience the enchantment of live radio, where every creak of a door and every note of the score is happening in real-time before your very ears.Narrators will invite the audience to listen to the slumbers, dreams and innermost thoughts of the inhabitants of the fictional small Welsh fishing town, Llareggub, (buggerall spelt backwards). Later, the town awakens, and, aware now of how their feelings affect whatever they do, start their day…

Director David Fletcher says: “Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas is one of the treasures of twentieth-century drama. Its charming and richly-drawn characters tell the story of a single day in the life of Llareggub, a small fishing town in Wales. We are captivated first by the dreams of the sleeping inhabitants, and, when dawn breaks, we hear the hullabaloo of breakfast time, the start of school, and the working day. We follow these fascinating locals through the day until night falls and they gather in the Sailors Arms. The entire story is told with Dylan Thomas’s enchantingly poetic language.”
